St Stephen’s Church, Snainton

Welcome to the Church in Snainton we hope you find the brief introduction on this web site interesting.

A church has been standing on this site since 1150, when a small Norman Chapel of ease to Brompton – St Mary’s  was built. It consisted of an aisleless nave roofed with stone slabs and had stone seats.

The chapel was demolished in 1835 because of decay, (possibly a fire), and because it had become “insufficient for the accommodation of persons desirous of assembling for public worship”. The foundation stone for the existing building was laid on 17th August 1835, and opened a year later.

When are we open?

Normally St Stephen’s  is open at weekends between 9.30 and 5.00pm.

We are situated on the A170 Scarborough to Pickering road at the western end of the village on the north side of the road. YO13 9AL, there is a car park for the church and cemetery on the west side of the church – go slowly the entrance is fairly small and slightly set back!

Church Roof Appeal

In 2018 it was acknowledged that the Church roof was in dire need of repair and that parts of the interior (especially the vestry) were subject to severe damp. A detailed programme of work was drawn up and an application for funding was made to the Heritage Lottery fund. We had initial approval for a ‘feasibility study’ which after invitations to tender and more detailed submissions led to approval for an extensive programme of works – eventually signed off in Autumn 2020.

The village has raised about £80,000 towards the overall refurbishment costs of £180,000. There is still more to do so if you can make a donation, we would be very grateful.

Part of the project was to research the heritage of the church in the context of village life and this has resulted in developing printed information and display boards in the Church. Some visitors may be interested in the main sources examined – Download PDFs:

We are pleased to acknowledge photographic © copyrights and our thanks to www.ScottGrant.uk  and Robert Williams. Thanks also to Heritage Adventures Ltd for help in researching our history.

Many thanks to our main funders & to all in the village who contributed.

We hope you find this of  interest. Come and visit us!
