Welcome to the Benefice of Upper Derwent

UPDATE: In light of COVID-19 many of our church groups, activities and services have had to change or be suspended. Please refer to our “Latest Updates” page for details of any changes or amendments, alongside, the general information on our “Services” page.

If you would like to know more about COVID-19 this short video may help, please click here.

In line with Church of England Guidance we are offering anyone who enters one of our church buildings the option to leave their details to aid the NHS COVID Test & Trace program, in order to help combat the spread of COVID-19.

Face coverings are currently mandatory on public transport and in a range of indoor venues including Places of Worship and church halls. While there are exemptions (please refer to the guidance document on face coverings) this is a legal requirement.

The Church of England have released various guidance and information on COVID-19 regarding services, Weddings, Funerals and online broadcasts, including details on the exemptions to the six person rule. Please click here to find out more.

To ensure each church and The Diocese of York can continue to pay their essential bills and remain financially viable, we may need to reimagine the ways in which we give to our churches. Whether that be continuing with Standing Orders, making a donation online by debit card, offering our cash giving by setting it aside prayerfully at home, or considering transferring to a digital form of giving. If you regularly give by envelope, may we encourage you to consider transferring your gift to Standing Order – this will enable us to continue to receive your weekly gift in a way that is safe and secure (click for more information: Brompton, Wykeham, Langdale End, Snainton and Hutton Buscel). Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need some help with this.

We urge everyone to keep following the latest official guidance from the Government and Public Health England on how to stay safe and look after each other as we all face the challenges ahead together.

The Benefice of Upper Derwent is a group of five Church of England churches (excepted charities) in the Diocese of York and part of the Deanery of Northern Ryedale. Four of our churches (Snainton, Brompton by Sawdon, Wykeham and Hutton Buscel) are scattered along the A170 between Pickering and Scarborough. The fifth at Langdale End is situated at the northern end of the parish of Wykeham not far from Hackness. All are on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. Our Parishes serve the small rural communities of Snainton, Wydale, Brompton, Sawdon, Ruston, Wykeham, North Moor, Hutton Buscel, West Ayton, and Langdale End.
